Farm Tour - The Vaughn family & friends

This past Friday I spent the morning with the Sarah, who is a huge supporter of The Farmer's Daughter CSA and her group of friends and family. We started off the morning teaching the kids about how we start our plants from seed and send them home with a seed to watch germinate and for them to later transplant into their backyard.
We then took a farm tour around our farm and the kids picked and ate; arugula flowers, fava beans, chocolate mint and carrots. its always refreshing to see kids enjoy fresh, real food. I try to compare vegetables that kids are not familiar with to food that they are familiar with. For example, when I try to get people to eat a arugula flower, they are timid to try it, once i let them know it taste like a sunflower seed, their eyes get big and they are now willing to try the arugula flower to see if it really does taste like a sunflower seed. This group of kids came up with a new familiar taste to for our chocolate mint. The kids compared the chocolate mint taste to having gum in your mouth without all the sugar. I love that comparsion and will now use it for our future field trips and farm tours.
We then visited the farm animals and let the kids feed them by hand.

"Katia's Korner" - The 6 minute egg

The 6 Minute Egg

The beauty of this egg is that it is easy to make and the visual impact is amazing.  This is a favorite in my household.  I found this recipe in a magazine and it comes from Seamus Mullen chef / owner of Tertulia in NY.

KMK Organic Farms organic free range eggs
a medium saucepan filled with water
a kitchen timer
a bowl filled 2/3 with ice and then covered with cold water
Course salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
Your choice of toast, buttered of course

Bring the water in the saucepan to a rolling boil DO NOT ADD SALT.  Gently add your eggs and set your timer for 6 minutes.  See video below.  I apologize but I had my dishwasher going while I was doing this.

Once your eggs are done just pull them out of the water and place them into the ice bath for at least 3 minutes although I keep them in there for 5.  See video below.

Make your toast and butter it.  Peel the egg and place on top of the toast.  Cut with a knife and let the gooey center spread all over that buttered bread.  Drizzle some oil over the top and season with the coarse salt and fresh pepper.  Enjoy!

Video - The Farmer's Daughter CSA via I Heart Fresno

In February,  the crew from I Heart Fresno came out to do a segment on The Farmer's Daughter CSA. Without their efforts many small, local business may go unnoticed. I can't thank them enough for the hard work that they put into their videos. I already have many people who saw the video online and have asked to join The Farmer's Daughter CSA. Something that could have cost me hundreds of dollars in advertising funds was done volunteering through I Heart Fresno. Thanks ladies you help small business's out tremendously!
